5 Reasons Why You Should Retake a "C" Prerequisite Course

A common question that we get here at Pre-PT Grind is, “Should I retake a prerequisite course if I got a C in it?” Is it worth it? Should I do it? Can I slide into PT school without retaking it? Can I save money? Can I say the time, the effort, the anxiety, the stress?

A lot of different factors go into retaking a class. You have to consider the financial aspect of it – do you have to work and save up money for each course you want to retake? You might already be busting your butt working and saving up money. You might be thinking, “do I really need to retake this class? Will it be worth it? All of this money that I'm making, can I save it and keep it for myself? Do I really have to go through another class? If I just retake one, will my GPA increase just enough for me to slide into a PT school?”

Retaking a prerequisite class has the opportunity to not only increase your GPA, but it can give you confidence and peace of mind knowing that you did every single thing in your control to give you the best shot of getting into PT school. You want to leave everything on the court. You want to do EVERYTHING you can in your power to put yourself in the best position to get accepted.

Here are 5 reasons why you should retake a perquisite class you got a C or lower in:

1. It boosts your GPA

This point is an obvious one. Give the programs what they want. If they care about GPA, give them a higher GPA. If grades are what they care about, give them the grades. If they want to play this game, show them that you can play this game. So let's get to work. Let's bump that GPA up, let's boost that GPA from a 3.2 to 3.6 or a 3.1 to 3.5. No excuses, just get it done.

 2. It will give you more confidence

PT school is hard, we all know that! It’s easy though to have “imposter syndrome” and think that you won’t be smart enough for PT school. But, if you keep in mind the prerequisite classes you took and the A’s and B’s you got in those classes, it shows that you’re smart and you have good study skills. You earned those grades! You can handle PT school. It just makes you feel so much more confident and the journey you're about to embark on is actually attainable and possible.

 3. It shows PT schools you can handle their academic rigor

Like what we said before..PT school is no joke, they're going to be throwing things at you left and right. You have to be disciplined, you have to have good study habits, you have to know what they’re talking about, you have to be all about it. If you retake a class and get an A in it, it’s almost like their nerves are calmed down. They’ll know you can handle the rigor of that class. That won’t be of concern to them, and then they can look at the rest of your application and see what you have to offer.

4. It will boost you up in the rankings

This is similar to the 1st point talking about boosting your GPA. So if you have a 3.3 GPA and are stuck in the middle of the pack and choose not to retake classes, you’re going to be stuck there. However, if you retake those classes and go from a 3.3 to a 3.7, it’s almost like you’re skipping the line and at the front now. If the program cares more about GPA and you can boost yours, you will pass so many people in the “rankings” of that program and put yourself in a great position to be accepted.

 5. It shows you respect the school’s standards

So if the school says. “No C's, we don't accept below of this GPA, we don't accept people with below this GRE score.”  And you still try to slide in with those C's or sliding with that GRE score that they're not asking for, they might look at your application and say “Well we said we don't want this but this applicant is sending in stuff that we didn't ask for. So if they’re not listening, not following directions, and not respecting us, why should we accept them?

If you do everything that they have asked for, it shows you respect their standards and it shows that you’re not trying to get in the easy way. It shows that you're understanding where they're coming from and you're giving them what they want. That's sending them a message.

Overall, you shouldn’t just retake a prerequisite class just to retake it. You have to think critically about why you’re wanting to retake the class. You will need to critically think as a SPT and as a DPT with your patients. We want to teach your how to critically think about your application in all aspects. If you believe it will help you as an applicant and you have a good reason for doing it, then do it! What are you waiting for?
