Choose Wisely

You need to become the applicant that you would accept. Consider what kind of person you would accept, ask yourself if you are that applicant and work towards becoming that applicant. The type of applicant you become is a choice.

Why does Physical Therapy interest you?

This is a common question, whether for an interview or an essay but often when answered there is a sense of struggle of trying to pull from something that's not there. The applicant recites things they've heard from other people because they are not that applicant that they would accept. There is something missing, that it factor is not there. They haven't become that person yet, they’re still faking it.

There are five tips on how to become that applicant.

First, get to know the profession outside of your clinic or one person's perspective. Get to know physical therapy on a deeper level.  Get the perspective from a someone in home health and outpatient. Gain a big picture of what physical therapy is, learn about the APTA, learn about the sports teams, legal stuff and politics. Get a well-rounded picture of physical therapy so that when you talk to these schools you can talk on any level for any setting. Get to know physical therapy on a broader level.

Second, develop a story to your why. You may say that you want to help people. That’s fine but dig deep and find out what interest you. It may be your story or someone else's story. Try to create a dramatic movie that you'd be interested in.

Third, don’t be afraid to seek help.  It will make life easier and you can become the applicant that you want to become easier, faster and a lot more stress-free.

Fourth, start early because if you start early, you have more time to become the applicant you would accept. If you start two days before you're supposed to, it's going to be more difficult.

Lastly, come from a place of giving. Right now, you may not have a lot to offer but come from a genuine place of what you can do for others.

These five tips will help you build the foundations to become a better person to become a better applicant so that you can stand out, be remembered and be recognized to get accepted. You need to become the applicant that you would accept but that person is built and requires work.  The things that we desire the most, we don't spend enough time working on. Start investing in these five tips. When we don't put in the work, we're fearful, doubtful and timid because we're unprepared, lack confidence and we're faking it. You must choose to work on it or not. If you don't become the person you will second guess everything you do because you don't believe in your ability to do it. There is no successful person that did not first become the person they had to become in preparation. They did this before they accomplished the things that we all know them for. This is the time you begin. This is the time you start transforming into that individual.
