So many times throughout our academic career, we've been trained to either ask the teacher, find a video, or get help from the tutor when we’re struggling. Basically, relying on other people to help us become a better student. Asking for help is a good thing, but, immediately running to others at the first sign of struggle may be a detriment to some people who are struggling with certain classes and other things that may not be working at this time. So, another tactic to think about is whether or not you’re an independent student or a dependent student.
Being independent versus dependent is important because this whole journey is an independent project. Meaning PT school, your board exam, the tests that you take in PT school, even the tests that you take now as Pre-PT students, you're taking them by yourself. So, whether you're a Pre-PT, going into PT school, or even started PT school already, a truth about studying that not a lot of people talk about is the importance of being an independent student and actually going through the struggles and frustrations of not understanding something.
Therefore, to “get better grades”, you should understand this. We're doing ourselves a disservice when it comes to our independent projects, meaning that stuff we have to do on our own - like the GRE. We have to do it independently, right? All the people who've told you how it works for them and regurgitated information to you, the people, the videos, who have told you information on how to understand something cannot take that test for or with you. So the importance of going through that struggle is to come out on the other side with an illuminated understanding of what you just went through, and what you just studied. When it comes time to bring that back out, you're not freaking out or anxious and you're not trying to remember what someone told you. You can easily bring it out of your head because it's forever ingrained in your mind. The experience level and being able to understand concepts at a deeper level than patients and other clinicians and health care providers are now coming out. Now you can rely on yourself, rather than other people when it comes to the test.
As you may know, PT school is not going to be easy and there will be times to ask for help, but find it when it's appropriate. That also goes for where you are in your journey now. Don't run from the struggle or the frustration. Don't run from things not being so easy right now because everything's not going to be so easy. However, move through the fire - struggling through things to come out on the other side as an independent thinker and student or as a critical thinker. Push through the struggle and embrace the frustration. Don't be scared of it. As you become independent, your grades will ultimately reflect that and you'll be in a much better place for it. On a bigger level, if you struggle through this now and understand these concepts, at the deepest level, when you become a physical therapist, it will come so much easier for you, and you'll give much better care to your patients.
