How to Make the Most out of Your Time as a Pre-PT Student

Productivity. What comes to mind when you see that word? We want to help you make the most out of your time because there’s only a few months left until the new PTCAS cycle opens up. And when that time comes around..our Pre-PT Grind messages ALWAYS tend to blow up saying, “How I’m going to do this? How do I do that?” So, we do have time, but really... we don’t have that much time.

So, how do we make the most out of it? We want to run through some steps of how to be productive and make use out of your time, especially now leading up to when that PTCAS cycle opens. Pretty soon, deadlines for applications will be rolling through and you might start freaking out, not knowing what to do. We want to run through some different tips that will help you be more productive as a pre-PT student.

  1. Make a list and just get it done

Write down the things you need to get done and cross them off as you go. Do what you need to do in order to make sure you get as much done off that list as possible.

  1. Cut the excuses

You have that list with all of those tasks on it. You have them written down. But sometimes you might be like, nah...I’ll get to that 3rd thing on my list later because I have this or that to do. I’ll just do it next week or tomorrow and it will be fine. If you get into this habit, you will never get anything done off of your to-do list. Stop making excuses, take one task at a shame and get it done.

  1. Give yourself less time to get things done

If you have 4 hours to do something or a certain task..you’ll take all 4 of those hours. If you only have 30 minutes to do that sme job, you’ll get it done in 30 minutes. So give yourself less time to do those things. You might look at other people and think, “Wow, how do they get all of these things done? How are they so productive?” And the truth is, they had no choice. They HAD to get those things done in order to move on to the next thing. They had no choice but to get studying done in two 45 minute sessions versus 10 hours throughout the day.

If you give yourself less time to do things, it will be easier to get those things done efficiently without dragging them out. Set a schedule for yourself and get it done.

  1. NO DISTRACTIONS

Be focused when you’re getting things done. Cut out the social media or watching TV. Be present with what you’re doing. It’s easier said than done, but you will be much more productive if you have no distractions.

  1. Take your emotions out of it

“Man...I don’t feel like doing this, it can wait for another time. I just want to watch my show. I can do it later.” Those are your emotions talking. You might be scared to reach out to a school and you might think, “I’m scared to do it. What are they going to think about me? Somebody’s going to make fun of me. Man, I don’t want to get started on that essay or do these observation hours cause I’m scared what the patient’s going to think of me.”

These are all of your emotions and what are you really are afraid of. If you take that emotion out of it - of what you don’t feel like doing, of what you’re scared to do, of what you don’t think you can do.. if you just shut that down and take that emotion out of it and just think of it logically, you can get those tasks done and be efficient. Because what happens is we just keep drawing it out and put if off another day. And that feeling of not wanting to do it will just get stronger.

And before you know it, a month later, you still haven’t got that task done. So take your emotions out of it and just get it done.

  1. Schedule fun things

This can actually help you get stuff done. If you say you’re going out with friends at 8:00pm one night, that could be your “deadline” to get things done, for example, you have to finish that essay before you can go out with your friends. Not only does that serve as an incentive to be productive, but you’ll feel a lot better about yourself if you get it done before going out! It’ll make things so much easier.

  1. Reward yourself for getting things done

Once you get all of your stuff done, once you’ve checked off those things on your to-do list, go ahead and reward yourself because you deserve it! That’s a huge accomplishment in itself.

Start implementing these strategies. Start envisioning yourself being more productive, and actually GO DO IT. You got this!
