PT School Is TOO Expensive!

There's one topic in particular that a lot of people question, "I'm considering not doing PT anymore because of how expensive PT school is." If you are locked into physical therapy, great! But if at any point you ever felt this concern, you are not alone and should continue reading. Now, my question to you, have you ever asked yourself that question, even if it was for a split second? But I'm telling you right now, this is a question that most people have asked because of the cost of physical therapy education, and we'll explain a little bit more. The cost of a PT school education has gone up.. people that went to PT school 20 years ago were not paying anywhere close to what most students are paying now, and this is the reality.

I'm not going to lie, PT is pricey, but so are all other health care programs. Do I wish PT school was less expensive? Absolutely! Anything to reduce loads and reduce debt- I'm here for it. But let's understand that this is a massive thing that's impacting health care education in general. It's not just a PT problem. Look at physicians or dentists, other healthcare fields impacted also with the high cost of school debt. For a vast majority of physicians and dentists, their school is more expensive, and their debts are higher, residencies are longer, and their fellowships are paying around 60k right out of school, instead of 130k. They graduate not making that 150k to 200k until four years after. Other professions have that same problem unless you're going to trade school. The other point is, be very careful about who you're having this conversation about- specifically about debt and loans. What I mean is - misery loves company, right? What happens is, it might be pre PTs or other physical therapy students that have no idea how they're going to pay off their loans outside of just their average PT salary. It might be physical therapists that are one year out of PT school, three years out of PT school, five years out of PT school. You're talking to them; they're telling you it's not worth it. So the problem that most of us are making is that we're going to the wrong people to try to find a solution for it, you're going to people that have not figured it out, you're going to people that are living a life of misery; they don't know how to be worth more. They don't know how to make more. 

There are people in our profession that have figured this out; there are PT students that are figuring this out. Funny enough, those are the people that still end up enjoying whatever they do. They're the ones that create time for themselves. Some of them are business owners, some of them are not, some of them travel. But it's a choice. It is a beautiful choice. I want you to be able to take your career into your own hands. So you can make as much or as little as you want; I don't want you to entirely leave it up to someone else, based on how much they want to pay you because if you do that, they'll end up paying you whatever they want. Now, of course, if you want a part-time job or full, it doesn't matter. If you leave your career entirely up to someone else, and what they decide for you, you're going get whatever they want to pay you.  

I think we have this dream of becoming physical therapists. But once we get to that other side, we pass our boards and we take our first job and all that stuff. It's like, "Alright, here's my career give me whatever you have for it." Now this company tells me how much I can make and now this agency tells me how much.. like.. no, this is your career. I think we forget, or we don't even think about how good we are, or how smart we are or how great we are to the fact that we understand that, hey, we can be in charge of our career. We can do whatever we want, whether it's our own thing, whether it's full time, whatever it is, but we can be in charge of our career, because we're good enough, we're skilled enough, we're smart enough. We have enough clinical knowledge to do this and to be in charge of our career.

You can do whatever you want. Is it going to be difficult at times? Yes, of course. It's going to be a struggle at times. Is it going to be amazing and exciting at times? Yes. All of that, yes, but it's your career. I want you to keep that in mind and make sure that you're in charge of what you're doing. Healthcare and physical therapy are both beautiful as long as you choose the career that you feel called to. There are always solutions to handle the financial aspect of it.
