The Real Reason Students Don't Get Into PT School

Pre-PTs all have the same fears, some are a little stronger than others because of different things; GRE practices not looking good, freaking out because the test is in two weeks. Then we start panicking and getting in our own head and start thinking, “Shoot there's a lot of other applicants. There's a lot of people in my class applying. I'm seeing people online that are killing it and they have a higher GPA. Maybe they're not struggling with the GRE.” Now we’re putting ourselves in a position where we start saying, “Shoot! maybe it's not meant for me, but I know I love it. I know that I can't really see myself doing something else but should I have a plan B?"

Sometimes I like to ask myself, what's my life? What's my buyout from choosing to do something else other than PT? With that, there are five questions you should ask yourself along this journey.

Question 1: “What will really stop me from getting accepted?”

  • Will the PT program prevent you from getting accepted? Do they have something against you?
  • Is it fake? Maybe you believe that It's fake, that PT might not be for you, even though you felt so strongly about it. So will that be what stops you?

Question 2: "Who am I afraid to disappoint?"

  • Are you afraid to disappoint yourself?
  • Family, coworkers, close friends?
  • Is it the school? Maybe you're afraid to disappoint the school. Maybe you're afraid that when you walk in for an interview and you get a rejection that you're disappointing them

Question 3: "What do I interpret 'success' to be as a Pre-PT?"

  • Do I interpret success as getting in on my first try?
  • Do I interpret success as maybe just getting into “some kind” of a profession, whether it's PT or not, I just need the satisfaction of knowing that I succeeded in getting some postgraduate degree.
  • Do I interpret success as not disappointing my parents?
  • Do I interpret success is not failing?
  • Do I interpret success as not getting a lower GRE score than I had desired? Such as getting a 300 or above or whatever I wanted and that’s a success?

Maybe your interpretation of success is preventing you from actually succeeding!

Question 4: "What am I actively doing to prevent myself from choosing to quit?"

You should have certain people in your life that you're saying, “These are my key people that I'm going to use every time I feel like pulling the plug?”

  • Think about your process and assess your habits.
  • Consider what you’re doing to keep yourself locked in.
  • Determine who and what do you need to block out?

Question 5: "Am I playing the same movie over and over and expecting a different result?"

You might’ve taken the GRE and it didn't go as well as you had hoped, so you went back and did the same thing and just studied more. Then the second time, it didn't go as well and so you did it again. Maybe you got rejected in the last cycle. So this cycle you figure you’ll just do a little more of the same or what everyone else is doing. “Playing the same movie”. Maybe it's your habits, that you're repeating the same unhealthy habits. Maybe it's how you handle your stress. Maybe when you're stressed you're saying, “you know what, let me just drown this out. I'll just get drunk every night and worries will go away”. Then you wake up and realize that the same problems are still there. Maybe that's the movie that you're playing over and over again rather than actually figuring out how to, in a healthy way, take care of yourself.

So the real reason must be that they quit. We have to ask ourselves, why? And what are the questions that we can ask ourselves now to help shift our mindset as applicants to literally change how we're playing this whole game? Now when it comes to that second question, this is probably one of the more personal ones because there are close people that have invested in us, whether it's our families, whether it's our significant others, maybe mentors, that you're afraid to disappoint.

You can't be so attached to disappointing somebody else because the only way you will is if you quit. The quicker we can start detaching ourselves from that responsibility, the better. If you're afraid to disappoint yourself, you have to realize that the only way you disappoint yourself is if you pull the plug entirely. If this is really your dream, that's how you discipline yourself. Find those key people that will hold you accountable every time you feel like quitting.

Remember: Quitting is a choice.

Bonus question: How resourceful am I?

There's so much out there. There are probably local mentors that you might have. As a Pre-PT you have access to so much stuff.

So what's it gonna be? Are you going to get into PT school? It's up to you. Ask yourself these five questions and if you need guidance contact us.
