I want you to think about this: you have something you're excited about doing like going to a party or a concert or maybe on a date. You start getting ready hours ahead of time. You're so excited to go so you're not procrastinating for that. Why? Because it's fun. Your expectations are so high for this experience that you do not want to procrastinate. There’s no reason to. You're so excited for that opportunity that your actions to get that opportunity follows. And what are those actions? Everything but procrastination.
Now, let's think about it from the PTCAS perspective or from the perspective of studying for the GRE. We've been taught to have our expectations and standards so low for stuff and the mindset that “we don't want to do it” for so long that our actions follow. And what are those actions? Procrastination!
A lot of you are thinking, “well, I took this class before and I failed.” “I took the GRE before and I got a low score and if that's just going to happen again why study?” “I don't feel like it, I'm just gonna be disappointed.” Again, your expectations, your standards for what's about to happen are so low that your actions follow and mainly that action is procrastination. Before you know it you're way behind schedule in applying and you're freaking out. However, If you want yourself to change and if you want your application to change you have to change something. That “something” you should change is that expectation. Expectations set the groundwork for how you produce the results that you want to happen. If you want more, you need to raise your standards, you need to expect more. If you expect so much out of others, why are you not expecting more of yourself? If you want to get into PT school, you have to expect that things will happen. But, if you change your motivation and you raise your standards for yourself to get in, everything will follow. Therefore, you don't have to worry about procrastination.
Now, you have a new reason to do things. Now, you have a new GPA to hit. You now have this expectation for your career and for yourself. You have new standards and new motivations. We have to retrain ourselves to have new expectations and new standards for what we want to do. So that we're not sitting here when it gets hard during PTCAS season thinking “man, I just don't want to write another essay.” You need to start thinking “I’m going to demolish that fourth essay” because you want to be a physical therapist for [insert your future/dream clientele].
Try this exercise out because your application is depending on this. Have new expectations so that your actions will follow so that your application will reflect you. If you're having trouble setting new expectations or new standards reach out to us.
