"Are you just an average PT student? Or will you be an excellent PT student who will then become an excellent PT?"
What would your perfect PT school applicant look like? The most interesting part about it is that many times, it’s pre-PT’s that are saying, “If I were on the other end, what is it that programs are looking for? What would I be looking for if I were a faculty member or as a student that's already in the PT program? What would I’ve been looking for?” Before we get into conversation, this is a question that you should think about as a pre-PT. If you are able to answer it, it will help you so much in terms of putting you in a position where you can now become your own perfect PT school applicant.
So first of all, let’s get the elephant out of the room. Let’s address it. We gotta talk about GPA. We gotta talk about GRE. The admissions crew for the school you are applying to look at those things. They have to pay their bills. They have to pay annual salaries. They have to pay the professors, admissions advisors, and other people in the department. So if someone drops out of PT school, THEY lose money and cold possibly run out of their business because people cannot handle the curriculum. You have to think in terms of the admissions committee at the PT school you are applying to. If you don’t provide a solid GPA or GRE score to the school, they have no way of trusting that you are going to pay their bills.
The most important part of this whole process honestly is just being very intuitive. A lot of times we expect that when we apply we'll just be the one who gets accepted. You might think, “Why shouldn’t I be that student? Why should I not be accepted?” Obviously, we know GPA and observation hours are looked at initially, but we really want to find out, “What are the characteristics?” What characteristics of a PT school applicant would you want if you were the admissions director? If you were a faculty member? If you ran your own personal PT school? What are the characteristics that you think would be ideal for a PT student?" Thinking about these questions should help you guys self analyze because when you guys are able to do this, then you now are taking some serious strives towards setting yourselves up to be pretty darn good PT school applicants.
Interacting with people at high level, ambitious, hard-working, a well-rounded individual who can handle adversity, and compassionate are some of the many characteristics of an ideal PT school applicant. If you were on the admission team at a PT school, how would YOU make sure that your applicants embodied these characteristics? So if you're saying, “I’m a hard worker. I have compassion. I have overcome adversity.” You might know that yourself, but how will the school know that? How would you measure that as a PT school? How would you make those characteristics stand out on your application or in an interview?
What else would make you stand out as an applicant? How well do you know the school that you’re applying to? Do you know them better than they know themselves? Cause if you can show that, that shows that you actually care about the school. You pay attention to detail. You organize with how you think about things. You show compassion. You show interest. Understand how the school was founded. Know things about the faculty members. Know what areas they specialize in. Know everything about THAT school.
Are you just an average PT student? Or will you be an excellent PT student who will then become an excellent PT? How are you showing that? Are you taking any business courses? Have you went to Smart Success PT live event? Have you went to the Combined Sections Meeting? Have you joined the Pre-PT Success Program? Are you reaching out and networking with others? Let’s establish a new standard for pre-PT’s. Let’s establish a new standard for what it means to be a next level or a potential all-star student physical therapist. There’s a lot of PT schools and getting accepted into a school is great and all, but are you setting yourself up to become the change profession needs?
You’re going to inspire a lot of your peers. Your goal right now isn’t just to pass the GRE. Your goal isn’t just to pass your classes this semester. Your goal isn’t just to make it through the application process and just hope that the schools that you're applying to are going to accept you. The goal is to set yourself up into becoming the type of applicant that you would want for your university. If you’re doing that, it’s a wrap. It’s done. And then at that point, you’ll look at yourself and know that you didn’t have any excuses.
