Why You Should NOT Go To Physical Therapy School

Is Physical Therapy Really for You?

Did I just ask that? Yeah, I did. I presume that most of you all are applying to physical therapy school this cycle and if you are still on the fence about rather physical therapy is for you or not; just keep reading. Because this blog is directed towards you. Believe it or not, there are pre-PT students out there who are applying to PT school with blind eyes. There are some who are actually applying “just because”, and sometimes, these are the exact people who will win a seat at the table instead of you because they have played the game far too well. But trust me, it will all catch up to them one day. For now, my job is to make sure you know the reasons to NOT go to physical therapy school.

I’ve finally completed my first summer semester of physical therapy school. It was nothing near a walk in the park, and to be honest I felt like PT school disrespected me and slapped me in the face. I became a new person, a new student, with a 360 degree perspective change. Going into the program, I had no idea what it would be like. Of course, I asked my peers and colleagues for their greatest advice. Some better than others, but I considered what was given to me. Then I started to think about those who had NO PASSION for physical therapy and all that it required.

If this person is you, you might want to consider these 3 reasons why you shouldn’t go to physical therapy school:

  1. If you have no idea what it’s like to study all damn day.
  • Yup, I totally went there. I felt like I studied day in and day out. Not even knowing what exactly to expect when it came to quiz and test days. I just knew I needed to know the information! I remember the nights where I felt bad for spoiling myself with a home cooked meal, knowing that I had to review and learn material for the next day. Trust me, it feels like guilt on a platter. LOL! (I hope you found some humor in this!)
  1. If you have no drive on being the best student you can be.
  • Just as it says, don’t waste your time or money because student loans are no joke, and if you aren’t prepared to prove that you deserve a long standing seat in the program, you should probably reconsider. PT schools requires dedication, persistence, and a desire to succeed along with hard work.

  1. If you’re unsure if physical therapy is for you.
  • Before submitting those PTCAS applications, I think you should ask yourself, “Is physical therapy really for me”. If you’re struggling as to know if this field is for you or not, my best advice is to get those observation hours in and ask a physical therapist that you trust about the field, and the long term requirements of being a physical therapist. This was very important to me, as I embarked on my journey to physical therapy school because I knew that time was precious and it’s something that I could never get back if I decided to put my all in becoming a PT.

So before you press submit and give your money over to PTCAS and supplemental applications, ask yourself if you have what it takes to actually be accepted into physical therapy school. Because only you can answer this question, it’s personal. These 3 key reasons as to why you shouldn’t go to physical therapy school actually helped me get ACCEPTED into PT school. This one life was handed to us, so why not make it our best.
