Would You Accept Yourself?

Would You Accept Yourself?

I can’t believe I’m actually about to tell you guys this. In all honesty, I'm actually happy I was denied my first time applying to physical therapy school. Yes, I said it. It wasn’t easy accepting this news in the beginning, I mean, who likes being denied anyways? I wasn’t just denied once or twice, but I received nine emails stating, “We regret to inform you." I know, tragic right? Yup, thousands of dollars thrown in the PTCAS and supplemental application offering plates. I never knew what so called  “failure” meant, until I had to face my reality. There were a million questions that ran through my mind, but when I look back on this first attempt at applying to physical therapy school; I’m grateful for the “No’s,” because I wouldn’t have accepted myself.

Yes, I wouldn’t have ACCEPTED myself!

I’m giving you guys my truth right now and looking back on the ‘Jazmine’ then as an individual, as a pre-PT student, I wasn’t ready; not the first time around. I’m not ashamed to tell you guys (Ohana) this. I don’t necessarily believe that this was a coincidence, but I think it’s unbelievable how in those 365 days, I evolved tremendously. I gained so much of what was needed during my first semester of physical therapy school, while not even realizing that it would’ve been needed for survival.

3 Things I learned during my denial year:

  • Patience: not only with myself, but with this journey. It’s not easy to go forth knowing that I had to wait an entire 365 days to apply again. During this time, I retook classes, gained more intern experience, and even received a job as a PT aide.

  • Endurance: I kept going. Despite what was happening between this year; good days or bad days. I decided to not let anything get in the way of me getting accepted into PT school, not my anxiety, fears, or naysayers.

  •  Acceptance: but without understanding what this meant, I could not partake in the recovery from denial. My bounce back, my game plan, the blueprint to that final acceptance letter. I accepted my ‘what was’, to make sure my ‘what is’ was secure.

Learning what these three core values meant, was when I could finally accept myself. I knew I wanted to become a physical therapist, and a good one at that. So I had to get out there, and figure out exactly what I needed to do for that acceptance letter.

No one is perfect, even though they may seem to have it all worked out. I’m not ashamed nor do I had the fact that I wouldn’t have accepted myself the first time applying to PT school. After my year of growth and understanding what it took to gain that acceptance letter. I would ACCEPT MYSELF, first round draft pick; without a doubt.

Would You Accept Yourself? Until next time Ohana,

-Jazmine J. Long
